Uncatalogued: Micklethwait, St John Aldrich, Rear-Admiral, 1901-1977

Photographs, newspaper cuttings, certificates and maps relating to Micklethwait's naval career. Including photographs of the interned German fleet at Scapa Flow in 1918, British warships during the Norwegian campaign in 1940 and paintings of the prisoner-of-war camp Marlag 'O' at Bremen, made by the artist John Worsley in 1944-1945. There are also maps of Norway and papers concerning arrangements for events marking the 25th anniversary of the battles of Narvik.

Administrative / biographical background
Micklethwait had distinguished service in command of Tribal Class destroyers during the Second World War, including HMS ESKIMO at the Second Battle of Narvik in 1940 and HMS SIKH on convoy duty in the Mediterranean in 1942. He won the DSO on three occasions. Micklethwait and most of his crew were taken prisoner following the action off Tobruk in which HMS SIKH was sunk. He spent the rest of the war as a POW in Italy and Germany. He was made a CB in 1952 and retired from the Navy in the following year.
