A sailing race at Lamlash with the awning spread as a spinnaker

A photographic print of a view looking forward to the bow of a cutter with five ratings on board racing in the Lamlash Regatta. An awning has been rolled around a spar and hoisted to be used as a spinnaker during the race. One of the sailors is sitting on the end of the spar placed across the boat through a rowing port while holding onto a halyard for balance.

The photograph is captioned 'Sailing Race at Lamlash. Awning spread as 'spinnaker'.'

Engineer Lieutenant Herbert Allan Slade joined the battleship at HMS Hercules's (1910) commissioning on 31 July 1911. He was then appointed to RN College Dartmouth on 14 May 1914.
