In the distance is the wreck of the steel five-masted sailing ship Preussen (1902), which was beached in Crab Bay after a collision with the steamer Brighton in November 1910.

The photograph is captioned 'South Foreland, showing the wreck of Preussen'.

Engineer Lieutenant Herbert Allan Slade had been appointed to HMS Zulu on 7 December 1914.
