A photograph of an unidentified girl with Peter Slade, aged three, sitting cross-legged on the ground in the garden at 'Hillside', Fareham. The girl, wearing a white skirt and a white bow in her hair, is holding a black ragdoll in her right hand while resting it on her left palm. Both the girl and Peter are looking at the camera. Lieutenant (E) Peter Slade died on 10 December 1941 aged 26 when HMS Prince of Wales was sunk by Japanese aircraft.

The photograph is captioned '26. July 1919 / In the garden at "Hillside"'.

Engineer Lieutenant Commander Herbert Allan Slade was appointed to the Department of the Engineer-in-Chief on 18 April 1918 and remained there until a successor was appointed in August 1922.
