The photograph is captioned '"Slabbie" log: "Something to eat please".'

Engineer Lieutenant Herbert Allan Slade joined the battleship at HMS Hercules's (1910) commissioning on 31 July 1911. He was then appointed to RN College Dartmouth on 4 May 1914. This photograph may be when the ship was in refit and he had time for shore leave.
