Career of Lt. Cdr. Herbert Allan Slade, RN (1888-1938)

A black/brown cloth covered album with the spine damaged, containing 294 contact prints glued in.

This album contains photographs relating to the career of Engineer Commander Slade between 1908 and 1919. Ships include HMS Hercules (1910), HMS Zulu (1909), HMS Theseus (1892), HMS Cleopatra (1915) and HMS Resolution (1915) in which he served. It alos includes photographs of his fiancee Kathleen Taylor. They were married on 15 March 1915 at St. James' Church, Portsea.

There are also photographs of RN Engineering College Keyham, Dartmouth College and the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Many naval officers are also included together with images of regattas, many delightful ships’ dogs and cats and family ‘snapshots’ of women and children mostly captioned and identified.

Herbert Allan Slade was born 19 March 1888, the son of Allan Herbert Slade (b1859) a Chief Engineer in the Royal Navy. Herbert Allan also entered the Royal Navy and was promoted Engineer Sub-Lieutenant 1908, Engineer Lieutenant 1910, Engineer Lieutenant Commander 1917 and Engineer Commander 1923. He was declared medically unfit in 1929 and died 3 August 1938. In March 1915 he married Kathleen Alice Taylor.
