An informal photograph of Rear Admiral Edward Francis Bruen (1866-1952) soon after his promotion from Captain on 23 September 1917. He is sitting on a bollard on board the battleship HMS Resolution (1915) with 'Ginger' a terrier standing on his right knee held by his right hand, and a closed telescope in his left hand resting on his left knee. He left the ship on 1 November 1917.

The photograph is captioned 'Rear Admiral Bruen. October 1917'.

Engineer Lieutenant Herbert Allan Slade had been appointed to HMS Resolution on 3 May 1916 while it was building. He was promoted to Engineer Lieutenant Commander with seniority of 1 August 1917 having passed 'very creditably for rank of E.L.Cr' on 5 April 1917.
