He is standing in a long overcoat and sea boots side-on to the camera with his head turned looking at the photographer. Both men are standing on the port side near the stern by the life ring. The white cliffs of Dover are in the background.

The photograph is captioned 'No. 1. An early morning study / Lieut. L. N. B. Morgan. Feb'y 1915'.

Engineer Lieutenant Herbert Allan Slade had been appointed to HMS Zulu on 7 December 1914. Lieutenant Lambert N. B. Morgan joined the ship in July 1914 as its first lieutenant.
