Page 9 (recto): Barlow bids farewell to his father. He goes to Manchester and pays 6s to a carrier for the journey to London. The journey takes eight days and is on foot, so that he is tired by the time they reach Aldermanbury.

Page 10 (verso): Barlow meets his sister, a servant at Snow Hill, who advises him to find his uncle. On the way to his uncle's tavern and post house, the Dog and Bear in Southwark, Barlow sees ships for the first time. Barlow starts work as a servant and barman, but quarrels with his aunt.
