Page 37 (recto): Barlow's first night aboard is spent in a cabin the size of a dog-kennel. He enjoys the dinner. Two days later the ship sails down the river to the Nore with a crew of more than 500.
Page 38 (verso): The ship takes in provisions in the Hope. Barlow is at the capstan when the ship weighs anchor, and receives a bad head injury when he is hit by a bar. It takes a year for this wound to fully heal.
