Recto: Barlow does not enjoy his placement at the whitester's, and tells his parents he will not return there. Verso: Despite the misgivings of his mother, Barlow prepares to leave his home for London.

Page 7 (recto): Barlow dislikes the work and his master, and resents the inferior food which the apprentices are given. He visits his parents, and refuses to return to the whitester's house.

Page 8 (verso): Barlow refuses to do any more local work for neighbours. He dresses in his best clothes and leaves for London, despite his mother's protests.
