Administrative / biographical background
Joseph Charles Walrond Henley entered the Navy as a cadet in 1893 and first went to sea on the battleship HMS EMPRESS OF INDIA in 1895. He was recommended for promotion several times in the period 1911-1916 whilst serving as gunnery instructor to the First Battle Squadron, flag commander to Vice-Admiral Burney and second in command of HMS MARLBOROUGH. He was promoted to captain after his part in the Battle of Jutland and was later mentioned in despatches for services in Russia in 1918-1919. He was awarded a CB in the Birthday Honours in 1925 and retired from the Navy in 1932. His second son John Arthur Cameron Henley was born in Hampshire and entered the Navy in 1930. He was awarded the DSC after his service on HMS CHARITY in Korean waters in 1952 and retired in 1963.
