Uncatalogued: Journal kept by Signalman William Hubert Moon while serving in the Third Destroyer Flotilla

Signal log book containing a journal kept by Signalman William Hubert Moon between 1 February 1926 and 10 November 1927, including postcards, photographs and newspaper cuttings.

Moon started his journal when HMS WILD SWAN (1919) was commissioned at Chatham for service in the Mediterranean as part of the Third Destroyer Flotilla in February 1926. The WILD SWAN was later sent to China to help protect British interests during the conflict between Nationalist and Communist forces (the Chinese Civil War). This involved the rescue of the British steamer KIANG WO (1901) which had been seized by Nationalist troops on the Yangtze river. The journal ends soon after the WILD SWAN had arrived back at Chatham in November 1927. While his ship was at Sheerness for boiler retubing between May 1926 and July 1926, Moon served on HMS WOOLSTON (1918) and then HMS WANDERER (1918).

With the journal are some loose photographs and postcards relating to Moon’s earlier service, including the First World War.
