Uncatalogued: Gunnery log kept by William Elrington Gordon on HMS VIRAGO

Gunnery log kept by William Elrington Gordon as mate in the wooden paddle sloop HMS VIRAGO (1842) in the Pacific, between 1851 and 1854. He later used the same volume for notes and ink sketches during his service as a lieutenant on HMS ST GEORGE (1840) in the Baltic. Loose inside the volume are two letters of appreciation from the Admiralty, relating to Gordon’s duties as captain of the torpedo school ship HMS VERNON (1832) at Portsmouth, 1883.

A journal kept by Gordon while on HMS VIRAGO in the Pacific is held by the Mitchell Library in Sydney (reference MLMSS 3091).
