Administrative / biographical background
Tibbits was a navigation specialist and had a distinguished career in the Royal Navy and Trinity House. He served in several of the most active theatres during the Second World War. He was on the cruiser HMS YORK until she was attacked by Italian motor boats and had to be abandoned off Crete in 1941. While serving on the cruiser HMS DEVONSHIRE, he won the DSC for his role in planning the invasion of Vichy French-held Madagascar. His first command was the frigate HMS SNIPE, based in Bermuda in the period 1949-1951. His later appointments included command of the minelayer HMS MANXMAN, then one of the fastest British warships, the navigation school HMS Dryad at Portsmouth, and the new aircraft carrier HMS HERMES. Tibbits resigned his commission in order to take up a post at Trinity House in 1961. After promotion to Deputy Master, he oversaw the modernisation of many areas of the service, including the automation of lighthouses and light vessels, and the streamlining of pilotage operations. During this period he was also a Trustee of the National Maritime Museum. He was knighted for his services to Trinity House on his retirement in 1976. He then settled on Bermuda, where he was involved in many aspects of the island's maritime affairs.
