A view of Rawson, Hart and Fulford of 'Discovery' (1873) on the ice at the entrance to Franklin Pierce Bay looking east towards Cape Prescott. At 1am the two ships made another start, but had to charge the ice in order to break it up. The crew on watch were sent ashore with poles and planks in order to move the broken pieces before the next charge. Due to the ice in Smith Sound, which prevented the two ships from rounding Cape Prescott for three days, the ships were compelled to make fast to an ice floe that extended from Cape Prescott to Norman Lockyer Island.
