View from 'Discovery' (1873) of 'Alert' (1856) ashore in Radmore Harbour, Rawlings Bay . With such heavy ice in Kennedy Channel, the two ships sought protection in Rawlings Bay. However, after securing to a grounded berg, 'Alert' was pushed ashore by a floe, leaving her stern in deep water. At about 6pm she had heeled over by about 22-25 degrees to starboard. As the tide fell, the 'Alert' was left exposed from the fore foot to the keel as far back as the fore channels. At 0015 'Alert' was refloated after she had been lightened. In order to haul her off, one of the bower anchors had been floated out on a piece of ice, which was then blown up when in the desired position.
