'Alert' (1856) in Winter Quarters at 'Floeberg Beach' on the north coast of Ellesmere Island.

A port bow view of 'Alert' (1856) in Winter Quarters at 'Floeberg Beach' on the north coast of Ellesmere Island. The ship can be seen adapted for the winter with an awning erected between the fore and main masts and snow banked up along the ship's sides. The ship's boats have been removed from the davits and placed ashore. To the right (port side of the ship) can be seen various structures for the stores and scientific equipment. In the distance to the left of the ship (starboard side) can be seen the outline of Cape Rawson.
