A view of the south coast of Washington Irvine Island (also known at the time as Sphinx Island) taken from near Cape Hawks. 'Alert' (1856) and 'Discovery' (1873) arrived here from Franklin Pierce Bay in the evening of 12 August. On 13 August a depot was laid a little further westward at Cape Schott, and a cairn built at Washington Irvine Island detailing the expedition's progress.
