The North Greenland Party prior to departing for 'Alert' (1856).

The North Greenland Party consisting of Lieutenant Lewis A. Beaumont, with HM sledge 'Sir Edward' (right) and Dr. Richard W. Coppinger with HM Sledge 'Stephenson' (left). Both were eight-man sledges. Thomas Mitchell took the photograph at about 8.30am prior to their departure at 8.45am to 'Alert' on passage to survey the north coast of Greenland. The Union Flag on Coppinger's sledge was lent by Lt. Fulford.
