A view of a crew member of 'Alert' in front of the grounded sea ice on the north coast of Ellesmere Island. The ice was found to be stranded at a distance of 100 to 200 yards from the shore, which formed a fringe of ice from 20 feet to upwards of 60 feet in height above water. This sea ice was known on the expedition as 'Floebergs' because it was formed by pieces of sea ice floe grounding and breaking off, and then being forced further onshore.
