'Alert' (1856) in Winter Quarters at 'Floe-berg Beach', on the north coast of Ellesmere Island.
A port near stern quarter view of 'Alert' (1856) in Winter Quarters at 'Floe-berg Beach', on the north coast of Ellesmere Island. Just to the east of Cape Sheridan, on 1 September 1875, the 'Alert' was secured inside a protective barrier of grounded sea ice. A depot of 2,000 provisions was landed for use of travelling parties, or if the ship came to any danger. Here she stayed for the winter months on what was called 'Floeberg Beach' until her release on 31 July 1876. The ship can be seen adapted for the winter with an awning erected between the fore and main masts and ice and snow banked up along the ship's sides. The ship's boats have been removed from the davits and placed ashore. The rudder has been unshipped and can be seen on the ice still attached to the rudder davits at the stern of the ship. The foreground has various structures erected to house stores and scientific equipment.
