A large split floe-berg aground off the north coast of Ellesmere Island
A view of an old 'floeberg' which has had its top melted and subsequently split. In front of the 'floeberg' is a six-man(?) sledge. The footprints suggest the crew were behind the photographer. Markahm recorded in his book that many of the larger floebergs were heard splitting in two during the very cold winter months, and attributed this to the contraction of the ice - the outer part being colder than the inner [AHM, p. 211]
