'Alert' (1856) in Winter Quarters at 'Floeberg Beach' on the north coast of Ellesmere Island.

A port view, just forward of broadside, of 'Alert' (1856) in Winter Quarters at 'Floeberg Beach' on the north coast of Ellesmere Island. An unidentified crew member stands to left of the ship in the middle distance. The awning that covered the upper deck between the fore and main masts has been removed, but the spars are still lashed in place between the masts. In the foreground can be seen the striations in the old ice from its contact with the sea bottom before it was turned over by pressure from other ice floes.
