Recto: Barlow is unemployed for several months before getting a post as chief mate on board the DELIGHT, a ship hired by the East India Company, bound for China. He gives a detailed list of the cargo. Verso: The DELIGHT is unable to get provisions at the Cape, and by the time they reach Sumatra many men are sick or have died of scurvy. Barlow is abused by the captain and they fight physically.

Page 225 (recto): The sailors' wages are reduced because of the damaged cargo. Barlow hopes to obtain a post as master of a ship, but his friend who might have helped him dies. Eventually he gets a job as chief mate on the DELIGHT, hired by the East India Company and bound for China. Barlow gives a detailed list of the goods put on board, and complains about the Company's rules against trading by the officers.

Page 226 (verso): The ship passes some sea tortoises and captures one for eating. The captain John Smith is a proud man and unkind to the crew. They are unable to get provisions at the Cape and as they approach Sumatra several men die of scurvy. By the time they anchor there most of the men are sick. Barlow falls out with the captain, who abuses him, and they fight physically.
