However he changes his mind at the last minute. Verso: The FLEET FRIGATE is steered by Barlow through uncharted shoals in the China Sea to Caberrero, where they anchor. In order to reach Canton the ship has to be towed up part of the river, and is not allowed to go further than Whampoa.

Page 287 (recto): On the voyage a passing ship informs the crew of King William III's death. At Batavia they convey the news to Dutch ships, who are reluctant to believe it. It had been agreed earlier that Barlow should pilot the ship from Batavia to China, but the captain now objects. However he changes his mind at the last minute. After this dispute Barlow does not get on well with the captain.
Page 288 (verso): The FLEET FRIGATE journeys up the China Sea, past Pulo Candore where there is a settlement recently built by the New East India Company. Barlow steers the ship through uncharted shoals into the Bay of Macao, where they anchor at Caberrero. Barlow also pilots the HALIFAX to the same anchorage. The FLEET FRIGATE has to be towed up the river to Canton after a certain point, and is not allowed to go further than Whampoa.
