Page 249 (recto): The RAINBOW steers round the Cape in bad weather and lands at Saint Helena. They hear news of the war between the Dutch and the French, and of problems in England caused by King James II's Catholicism. On the return voyage to England they see a comet. The ship springs a big leak in stormy weather.
Page 250 (verso): Near the Downs they see a large fleet and hear news of the accession of King William III. The frigate MONTAGUE presses all the ship's seamen in exchange for worse men from their ship. There is a violent storm and the RAINBOW fouls a man-of-war and has to cut down the mainmast. The damaged ship, now without its captain, is driven across to France and the sailors only regain control of it when the wind drops. They escape three small privateers which chase them.
