Recto: The RONE FACTER passes down the Seine and unloads her cargo at Rouen. She is then hired to take hoops to Malaga. Verso: The ship returns to Portsmouth, where dishonest officers from the ROYAL CHARLES sell them items from their stores. Recto: Barlow falls out with the captain who cheats the sailors of some of their wages on arrival home. He signs on as second mate on the CADIZ MERCHANT, and explains his duties. Recto: The GUANNABOE takes on board the cargo of a ship which arrives in Port Royal damaged by a hurricane. They set sail from Jamaica accompanied by several other ships. Verso: The ship runs short of provisions on the voyage home, and on arrival the sailors have to pay for damaged cargo. Barlow stays at home for a long time, due to the uncertain political situation in England. (Manuscript) (JOD/4/221-222)

Recto: Barlow ships as chief mate on the CADIZ MERCHANT, bound for Jamaica. He describes the indenture system in the West Indies. Verso: The voyage home experiences bad weather and there is damage to the ship and her goods. Florida Indians sell them a mysterious substance. (Manuscript) (JOD/4/223-224)

Recto: Barlow is unemployed for several months before getting a post as chief mate on board the DELIGHT, a ship hired by the East India Company, bound for China. He gives a detailed list of the cargo. Verso: The DELIGHT is unable to get provisions at the Cape, and by the time they reach Sumatra many men are sick or have died of scurvy. Recto: The captain turns Barlow off the ship without paying his wages. Barlow manages as best he can on shore, but there are few visiting English ships and little trade apart from gold. Verso: The KENT encounters some Danish ships, at war with the Moors. They sail from Mumbai round the Cape of Good Hope to the Island of Ascension, where they load some turtles to eat. Recto: Barlow, now in charge of the RAINBOW, runs her aground at Ramsgate. They reach Blackwall after repairs, and Barlow gives thanks to God for his survival in a lengthy passage of prayer. Recto: They receive news that the French fleet has left port, but cannot find any French ships. The ST. MICHAEL catches fire, which is soon put out but several men jump overboard and are drowned. The Straits fleet arrives at Kinsale. Verso: The French fleet captures several West Indies merchant ships and two frigates. Recto: The English fleet fails to find the French fleet and returns home. Bad weather damages ships and the CORONATION sinks with the loss of 500 men. A frigate blows up due to stolen powder hidden on board, killing some 70 men. Verso: Barlow reflects on the failure of the attempt to engage with the French fleet, concluding that God was displeased with the nation's debauchery and pride. Recto: Barlow ships as chief mate on the Indiaman SAMPSON. They sail with three other ships, and call in at Grand Canary Island for repairs to an anchor and the main yard. Sir John Goulesbury, who is unpopular, dies. Verso: The SAMPSON calls at Kedgeree, where they are required by the East India Company to hinder the trade of an English interloper ship. Recto: A great storm suddenly blows up. The foreyard is broken, but as the sails that are blown away are old there is less damage to the masts than if they had been new. Verso: They call in at Saint Helena, and after leaving the island the ship's cook falls overboard and is drowned. On arrival at Barbados the local people are interested to see spotted deer aboard the SAMPSON, and a cinammon tree. (Manuscript) (JOD/4/265-266)

Recto: The SAMPSON is badly damaged by a storm, and only 11 ships of the fleet of 26 that left Barbados arrive back in England, the rest being lost. The men aboard the SAMPSON are all pressed at Gravesend. Verso: Barlow is accused of killing a seaman by striking him, and avoids a trial by paying £50 to the widow. His youngest child dies, leaving two surviving out of six. Barlow ships on the SEPTER, bound for Surat. (Manuscript) (JOD/4/267-268)

Recto: Barlow itemises the SEPTER's cargo. They sail in a large convoy of ships but are delayed by the Jacobite plot to kill the King, as a result of which they lose men who are pressed. Verso: Barlow criticises the navigation of the commanders, as a result of which many men on board the SEPTER die of scurvy or thirst before land is reached. Recto: The SEPTER arrives at Anienga, where the East India Company have a factory and fort. The chief commodity is pepper, and children can also be bought. The captain buys a boy for 25 shillings. Recto: The SEPTER captures fishing nets from the Rovers, and a violent gust of wind in the night is believed to have been conjured up by the Rovers' crews as revenge. The SEPTER takes twelve lascars on board at Mumbai. Verso: The captain of the SEPTER, George Phenney, dies on board and is buried at sea. Barlow assumes command of the ship and they reach Mocha, where he is treated with honour by the governor. He hires a house. (Manuscript) (JOD/4/273-274)

Recto: Barlow describes the local prices, commodities and trading arrangements. He entertains the captain of one of the Mogul's great ships on board, and later dines with a Moorish merchant on shore. Verso: The SEPTER travels with other ships in convoy to Surat. On the way they encounter the ADVENTURE GALLEY, commanded by the pirate Captain William Kidd, and drive her off. Recto: On arrival at the Downs after a journey of six months, Barlow is disappointed not to be confirmed as commander of the SEPTER. He blames two of the ship's owners. The new commander is not a good seaman, and the ship is cast away on its next voyage. Verso: Barlow fails to obtain the command of the MADERASS because, despite offering £100 as a gratuity, he is outbid by another man. He then ships as chef mate of the WENTWORTH, bound for China. Recto: The WENTWORTH encounters mainly Dutch ships on its voyage to Batavia. During her stay there some criminals are executed, including Chinese, Javanese natives and Dutchmen. Verso: The WENTWORTH anchors near Caberrero island, where she is measured by the Emperor's Chief Custom Officer. The ship is also visited by the Hoppowe, or Mandarin, whom Barlow describes. Recto: Barlow describes the lifestyle and chief trades of the Chinese, who are pleasure-loving and live in subjection to the Tartars. The WENTWORTH loses her longboat and pinnace in a storm. Verso: The WENTWORTH sails to Sumatra and Java. They hear news of an Act of Parliament prohibiting the importing of wrought silk goods. Recto: On arrival back in England Barlow loses 30% on tea and lacquerware that he bought on his own behalf. Barlow leaves the WENTWORTH after failing to agree with the captain about wages for his next voyage. Verso: Barlow signs on as chief mate and China pilot of the FLEET FRIGATE, bound for Canton. 85 gallons of French brandy are bought for the voyage, but Custom House men from Deal confiscate it. Recto: On the voyage to Batavia they are informed of King William III's death. It had been agreed earlier that Barlow should pilot the ship from Batavia to China, but the captain now objects. However he changes his mind at the last minute. Verso: The FLEET FRIGATE is steered by Barlow through uncharted shoals in the China Sea to Caberrero, where they anchor. In order to reach Canton the ship has to be towed up part of the river, and is not allowed to go further than Whampoa. (Manuscript) (JOD/4/287-288)

Recto: Against Barlow's advice the captain orders the best sails to be replaced by old sails, and as a result the old mainsail is destroyed in a gust of wind. The captain blames Barlow and relieves him of his post as chief mate. Verso: The captain complains about Barlow and he is sent on board the KINGFISHER for the voyage home.
