Verso: The ship returns to Portsmouth, where dishonest officers from the ROYAL CHARLES sell them items from their stores. Recto: Barlow falls out with the captain who cheats the sailors of some of their wages on arrival home. He signs on as second mate on the CADIZ MERCHANT, and explains his duties. Recto: The GUANNABOE takes on board the cargo of a ship which arrives in Port Royal damaged by a hurricane. They set sail from Jamaica accompanied by several other ships. Verso: The ship runs short of provisions on the voyage home, and on arrival the sailors have to pay for damaged cargo. Recto: Barlow ships as chief mate on the CADIZ MERCHANT, bound for Jamaica. He describes the indenture system in the West Indies. Recto: Barlow is unemployed for several months before getting a post as chief mate on board the DELIGHT, a ship hired by the East India Company, bound for China. He gives a detailed list of the cargo. Verso: The DELIGHT is unable to get provisions at the Cape, and by the time they reach Sumatra many men are sick or have died of scurvy. Recto: The captain turns Barlow off the ship without paying his wages. Barlow manages as best he can on shore, but there are few visiting English ships and little trade apart from gold. Recto: At Surat they hear of the Duke of Monmouth's rebellion. Due to the Company's debts the KENT has difficulty finding cargo, but eventually takes on board calico and pepper. Verso: The KENT encounters some Danish ships, at war with the Moors. They sail from Mumbai round the Cape of Good Hope to the Island of Ascension, where they load some turtles to eat. Verso: The RAINBOW is badly damaged by a storm near the Downs, and is driven across to France. Eventually they regain control of the ship and return to the English coast. Recto: Barlow, now in charge of the RAINBOW, runs her aground at Ramsgate. They reach Blackwall after repairs, and Barlow gives thanks to God for his survival in a lengthy passage of prayer. Verso: Barlow visits his mother and brother near Manchester. He signs on as a volunteer in the ROYAL SOVEREIGN. King William and a fleet of Dutch men-of-war from Holland join them and eventually there are nearly 90 fighting ships, which sail down the Channel in line abreast. (Manuscript) (JOD/4/251-252)

Recto: They receive news that the French fleet has left port, but cannot find any French ships. The ST. MICHAEL catches fire, which is soon put out but several men jump overboard and are drowned. The Straits fleet arrives at Kinsale. Verso: The French fleet captures several West Indies merchant ships and two frigates. Recto: The English fleet fails to find the French fleet and returns home. Bad weather damages ships and the CORONATION sinks with the loss of 500 men. A frigate blows up due to stolen powder hidden on board, killing some 70 men. Verso: Barlow reflects on the failure of the attempt to engage with the French fleet, concluding that God was displeased with the nation's debauchery and pride.
