Page 279 (recto): The SEPTER is accompanied by the CHARLES on its six-month journey home to the Downs. On arrival Barlow is disappointed when he is not confirmed as commander of the SEPTER. He blames Captain Heath and Sir Henry Johnson, two of the owners, and his own lack of money to bribe them. The new commander is not a good seaman, and the ship and its cargo are cast away in the Bristol Channel on her next voyage.

Page 280 (verso): Barlow stays at home for a year, refusing several offers of posts as first mate. He offers £100 as a gratuity to obtain the command of the MADERASS, but despite being promised the position is outbid by another man who gives more money. He then ships as chief mate of the WENTWORTH, part-owned by Sir Henry Johnson and bound for China. The ship sails in October 1699, carrying cargo which Barlow itemises.
