Page 273 (recto): The SEPTER captures fishing nets from the Rovers. A violent gust of wind in the night is believed to have been conjured up by the Rovers' crews as revenge. Barlow explains the recent history of piracy in the Mumbai region, and how the English were unfairly blamed and punished for the capture of the Great Mogul's ship by pirates. The SEPTER takes twelve lascars on board. They approach the coast of Ethiopia.
Page 274 (verso): The ship is approached by two canoes, with poor men aboard who beg for some clothes. The captain, George Phenney, is taken ill and dies within twenty-hour hours. He is buried at sea and Barlow takes over command of the SEPTER. They reach Mocha, where Barlow and the purser are taken to the governor's house in state, accompanied by musicians. They are well-received by the Governor, given coffee and sprinkled with rosewater. Boys singing escort them to the broker's house. Barlow hires a house to stay in.
