Failing to find the French fleet, which has returned home, the English ships also return but are damaged in very bad weather. The CORONATION sinks with the loss of nearly 500 men. A frigate blows up because of stolen powder hidden on board, killing some 70 men; the perpetrator is later hanged at Chatham. The ships' crews are paid off, and Barlow receives a midshipman's pay, £19 10s.
